It has 8 bunks and the category of Standard Hut.Built in 1961 by the NZFS as a standard S70 6-bunk design with an open fire, it is located 0.5km below (at-the-time), the nearby Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC) hut of the same name; until 1977/78 when the CMC hut burnt down. The NZFS hut was used by government hunters until 1972. The original open fire was replaced by a wood burner in 2001, & the single glazed windows replaced with aluminium framed ones. Mid April, 2025, saw a team of 15 Backcountry Trust volunteers begin a full-scale renovation, which was completed in June, 2025, including converting the 6-bunks into 8 platform-styled ones.Location:

Sandfly heaven. Tidy hut, easy to reach but way too many sandflies to be able to stay.

The Monkey fan section was dry and stifling hot when we visited. Take plenty of water for this section. The bush section directly before the hut has a vertical drop to navigate. Best to stay to the river bed if dry. Good water source and watch for the hut on your left.
